Our Mission

The purpose of the Commission is to review, recommend and approve innovation and reform proposals affecting the Virginia Medicaid and Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) programs, including eligibility and financing for proposals set out in Item 307 in the Department of Medical Assistance Services. Specifically, the Commission shall review (i) the development of reform proposals; (ii) progress in obtaining federal approval for reforms such as benefit design, service delivery, payment reform, and quality and cost containment outcomes; and (iii) implementation of reform measures.

Our Public Comments portal is now available and we welcome the input, respectfully presented, of all stakeholders as we weigh the decision on whether or not to expand Medicaid in Virginia.

Public Comment Guidelines:

  • DO NOT include personal/private information (phone number, address, etc.).
  • Do not use obscenities, make personal attacks or use hate speech in any way.
  • No spam, including multiple comment submissions that contain the same content (i.e. form letters).
  • We strongly encourage groups and organizations to consolidate remarks to reduce duplication.
  • Please note that ALL comments are reviewed by the administrator before being posted. If comments follow the guidelines they will be posted, in the order that they are received, on our Public Comments page. Due to the large volume of comments that are being received it may take several days for the comments to appear on the website.

    We are currently working on a Public Comments portal on our website that will allow individuals to submit comments and suggestions to the Commission. This new feature should be available shortly after Labor Day.

    Comments submitted through the website will be made public, so we ask that you contribute thoughtful and informative comments in order to help the Commission make the decision on whether or not to expand Medicaid in Virginia

    Governor Bob McDonnell sent the following letter to United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius detailing and explaining recent legislative actions in the Commonwealth regarding the Medicaid program.
